- The Surgical Technician is an integral part of the multi-disciplinary OR team. Prepares operating room for surgical patient, reviews preference cards to determine surgeon needs, obtains the necessary supplies and equipment for the procedure, ensures cleanliness of room, and assists with opening sterile supplies. Assists surgeon during surgery.
Performs surgical scrub duties, and assists with the collection, identification, and disposition of cultures and specimens.
Assists in turning over of room, and ensures supplies, instruments, and equipment are returned to proper location.
General Accountabilities*
- Follows surgeon's directions and carries out requests.
- Applies sutures, staples, clips, or other materials.
- Assesses skin integrity upon completion of the procedure to determine if damage has occurred.
- Assists in the insertion, positioning, or suturing of closed-wound drainage systems.
- Assists members of surgical team with gowning or gloving.
- Clamps, ligates, or cauterizes blood vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry.
- Participates in the positioning of patients.
- Maintains an unobstructed operative field.
- Monitors patient position, vital signs, or volume and color of blood.
- Assists in applying casts, splints, braces, or other similar devices.
- Covers patients with surgical drapes to create and maintain a sterile operative field.
Job Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of accredited program
- Experience: at least 3-5 years of experience as a surgical assistant
